“It's mine.” Even Farley's voice had changed, it sounded deeper now and heavy with threat. It was no longer the voice of the man Siddal had grown up with.

“You know Gia won't just let you take it.” Siddal took another small step forward.

“Stay where you are,” Farley told him, his teeth bared in a snarl as he spoke.

“Let me take it back to Gia and we can get you some help.”

“I have all the help I need right here,” Farley said, resting his palm upon the book. “As soon as I find out the witches secrets people will have to ask me for help... I'll be the one with the power.”

“I'm sorry Farley... I'm taking it back.”

With a confidence he didn't truly feel Siddal strode the rest of the way into the house and as soon as he could he reached for the book. Farley's fist connected squarely with Siddal's nose in a loud crack of cartilage and gush of blood making the man stagger back in shock. In all their years of friendship nothing had ever driven them to blows before.

“It's MINE!” Farley repeated, gathering the book into his arms and holding it close to his chest.

His head still reeling from the blow, Siddal grabbed for the book, trying to pull it from Farley's grip. Lowering his head Farley charged at Siddal, slamming him hard into the wall, knocking the air from his lungs as he collapsed to the floor.

“Mine,” Farley said again, a manic giggle echoing behind his words.

“No, it's mine.” The voice in the door way made both men turn to look. If Siddal thought that Farley's eyes looked possessed then they were nothing compared to Gia's.

Farley took an involuntary step backwards while Siddal struggled to get back to his feet afraid of what his wife might do.

When Gia saw the blood down the front of her husband's shirt the mania in her eyes increased. Siddal was hurt and the culprit was also trying to take her life's work away from her.

Raising her hand Gia summoned up the magic she rarely ever touched and with a flick of her wrist a gust of air flew past her and Farley went flying across the room, ending in a heap in the corner, the book flying from his grip to land at Gia's feet.

Picking up the book Gia walked slowly over to Farley, her eyes burning into him as she began to close her fist. Farley gasped as he began to choke, as if Gia's hand were around his throat, but he could not tear it away because there was nothing there.

“Gia please, stop it.” Siddal had staggered to his feet and was standing behind his wife watching as his friend's eyes began to bulge and his face turned red. “Please... let him go.”

Turning her head to look at her husband Gia's grip on Farley's throat lessened enough for him to pull some much needed air into his lungs.

“But he...”

“I know what he did... but don't do this, I beg you.
